the brokenmusicbox :: waking the sound
waking the sound, the debut album from san francisco duo the brokenmusicbox, does so gently, warmly. the sound is not snapped from sleep, but given time and space and sympathy to slowly realize how much better it is to be awake than sleeping, what kind of joys it had missed in slumber. which is not to say the album lacks verve. rather, the brokenmusicbox rightly don’t feel the need to show off or forcefully wrest attention with noises or tricks or false emotion. the confident & well-crafted songs on waking the sound patiently, insistently capture attention by dint of their simple beauty. and awake now, see how our smile spreads.

Indroducing: The Brokenmusicbox
posted by Kip @ 4:28 AM
Every now and again something crosses my path that rubs me in the right way long before the CD hits the tray. I recently received the debut album, Waking The Sound, from San Francisco’s The Brokenmusicbox and was immediately touched. An index card with a typewriter greeting paved a clear path to the listening experience.
The brokenmusicbox was initially a moniker for Kimberly Contreras’s solo recording. It reflected the continuous struggles she had with her home four track recorder. Kimberly would meet fellow musician Tony Wentzel at Annex Recording Studios. The two began sporadically recording together. Both continued working with other bands/projects.
In 2006, the duo decided to expand the sounds they were putting on tape and added a keyboard player to the equation. What was created during this period would become their debut full-length. If you like what you hear below, click here to purchase a copy of waking the sound
